FAQ
FAQ - Most frequently asked questions and answers by Jay's K9 Universe for common pet owners like yourself.
What types of dogs do you train?
We train all breeds, all sizes, all ages. Pretty cliché, but it’s true! We work with young puppies, young adults, and even “senior” dogs. Our programs aren’t only designed for dogs with major behavioral issues (reactivity, aggression, anxiety, etc.) they’re also for owners who are looking for basic training for obedience and manners.
Is my dog too young or too old for training?
Expectations and goals are different depending on your dogs age, but there are no untrainable dogs. Owners can start working with their dogs as young as 8 weeks old through play and food work. Here at Jay’s K9 Universe we can start helping owners as young as 14 weeks.
What training program is right for my dog?
Owners can benefit from all of our training programs. Each program requires “homework” on the owners end. Virtual training is typically for owners who would love our services but can’t quite reach us geographically. Our One – On – One Program is for those who are looking for a little guidance with establishing a foundation and some troubleshooting with minor behavioral issues. Our most popular program is our Board & Train Program, it’s simply unmatched. This program is for owners who are looking for more extensive and consistent training to improve their goals of basic manners and obedience, to owners who are struggling with major behavioral issues such as anxiety, reactivity, and aggression.
WHY BOARD & TRAIN AND WHAT DOES MY DOGS SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
Our Board and Train Program is popular amongst owners because we have the opportunity to spend time implementing new habits every day to build a solid foundation for your dog.
WHAT DOES MY DOGS SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
Depending on the season, your dog will enjoy activities such as hiking, swimming, bike rides, and dog socialization, to name a few. We also include exercises such as agility and treadmill training. Obedience training is a huge part of our program, but it’s not the only thing. Dogs need real world experiences, where they can be taken out into the public without the fear of misbehaving, leaving owners feeling embarrassed. We make sure we cover the basics (Structured Walks, Obedience, Play, and Good Manners) while also creating a fun environment for all dogs no matter the issues they maybe experiencing. Our board and train program is designed for dogs who need help in any aspect of training and most importantly, for owners who are willing to learn. We take pride in our ability to not only help your dog, but to help YOU as the owner.
What approach does Jay's k9 universe take to training?
The foundation of everything we do here at Jay’s K9 Universe is based around positive reinforcement, engagement, and play. Our goal is to improve the relationship between dogs and owners through clear communication, structure, and boundaries. Improving your leadership, instilling confidence within you, improving your knowledge, and most of all teaching you to have fun with training. We believe in exposing your dog to situations they will face in the real world. Whether it be minor issues in the household (nuisance barking at the door or in the window)
What training tools does Jay's k9 universe use?
We use a wide variety of tools for efficiency, safety, and clarity, making it easier to communicate effectively to dogs and owners. Our trainers often use food, treats, toys, slip leads, prong collars, martingales, e-collars, crates, and place beds. We believe in safety and using humane tools because we care for the welfare of your dog.
Will I get to visit my dog while in board and train?
During the first few weeks of your dogs stay we provide owners with update video calls to communicate how your dog is progressing each week. During the last three weeks (two weeks in our 4 Week Program) we have transitional sessions to start transferring the information over to you and allow you that time you’ve been missing with your dog. We break these sessions up so that you’re not overwhelmed with all of the new information your dog has learned. These sessions can last up to two hours, as we want to be as thorough as possible as we help you embark on this new journey.
How will the work in your facility translate when my dog gets home?
We do our best to expose your dog to common real world situations like being in public, and working on the goals that specifically fit your lifestyle. Our goal is to set owners up for success during and after our program. Along with hands on work at our facility, we provide owners with a detailed “Go Home Packet” to help you with the transition when you bring your dog home. It’s also a point of reference for troubleshooting in areas you may have questions about or struggles in.
